What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. It is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which codes for a protein involved in regulating salt and water transport across epithelial cells.

The disease is characterized by the production of thick, sticky mucus that clogs the airways and digestive tract, leading to recurring lung infections and malnutrition. CF can also cause infertility in males due to blockage of the vas deferens.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

The symptoms of cystic fibrosis typically appear in early childhood, often around 2-3 years old. They may include persistent coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath, as well as recurring lung infections.

Diagnosis is usually made through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests, including genetic testing to confirm the presence of the CFTR gene mutation.

Treatment and Management

There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis, but treatment can help manage the symptoms and slow disease progression. This may include antibiotics to treat lung infections, bronchodilators to open airways, and pancreatic enzyme supplements to aid digestion.

Lung transplantation is also an option for individuals with severe CF-related lung damage.
